‘So, what’s the weirdest fan story you’ve got?’ Rosie asked as she leaned across the table towards him.

‘Weirdest?’ Kolby thought for a moment. They were on desserts now. The bottle of champagne was empty, and he’d already asked if she fancied another drink. She’d declined alcohol for now and gone for a mocktail instead. Another tick. She was a woman who didn’t like to lose control of herself, but then, after what he had learned about his sister, that probably shouldn’t be a surprise.

They had been talking nonstop. Giggling away, and it had nothing to do with the drink. At one point, he had been laughing so much that he’d had to cover his mouth with his napkin, worried about snorting champagne out of his nose.

‘Well, for starters, they’re not fans, they’re followers,’ he clarified.

‘They’re absolutely fans,’ she said, leaning forward on the table. ‘So? What have you got? I know you have to have some horror stories.’

Kolby pressed his lips together. Most of the weirdness he received came from online, but there had been a couple of times that it had leaked into the real world. ‘Well, I did get one woman banned from my gym because she kept taking videos of me.’

‘Seriously?’ Rosie’s eyes widened.

‘Yep. I didn’t want to get her banned. I must have asked her to stop at least a dozen times, but then I had to get management involved. Apparently, she was trying to prove I lied about how much weight I was lifting.’

‘Did you?’

‘No, no way. Social media is too intense for that. There’s no point in lying, not when you’re as big as I am. People will dig and find the truth.’

Rosie chuckled. ‘Fair point.’

Her hands were stretched across the table and Kolby fought against the undeniable urge to reach out and intertwine his fingers with hers. But the last thing he wanted was for her to think it was a ploy. A move. There would be time for that later.

‘I’ve also had my fair share of strange gifts,’ he said, keeping the conversation going.

‘Gifts? But people don’t know where you live, right? How do they get them to you?’

‘They usually turn up at events – like when I’m opening a new bar or something, and it’s been posted where I’ll be.’

Kolby grinned. He liked telling these stories; he knew the reactions they’d get.

‘Okay, hit me with the worst,’ Rosie said, visibly bracing herself.

‘Well, I once had someone leave me a week’s worth of dirty, worn underwear.’

Rosie wrinkled her nose. ‘Male or female?’

‘Both. And I mean worn. It was gross. Horrible.’

She laughed. ‘That’s vile.’

‘And another time, someone made a book with my face photoshopped into all these pictures, making it look like we were a couple. They’d done such a good job. Honestly, I had to do a double take at some of them just to make sure it wasn’t actually me and I’d had a massive bout of amnesia. And that wasn’t the worst part. She’d used AI and made pictures of what our children would look like together.
